Career Fair

Students explore work options at Career Expo

Round Rock ISD high school students learned about the world of work from more than 30 local employers on Nov. 13 at the sixth annual Round Rock ISD Partners in Education Foundation 2009 Career Fair held at the Round Rock Higher Education Center (1555 University Blvd., Round Rock).

Roughly 800 ninth grade students from all four district high schools visited booths to gather information about career options and the specific education required for success in those careers.

The Career Fair is a wonderful opportunity for ninth grade students across the district to learn more about potential careers, RRISD Academies and postsecondary educational options in the Central Texas Area. This annual event featured a college and career readiness program that offered students the opportunity to hear about the importance of education directly from the district superintendent, attend interest-specific career exploration sessions, and visit with area businesses that align to all 16 career clusters.

Students attended career sessions with industry speakers, ACC departments and RRISD Academy teachers and students and visited vendor areas and visited with businesses from all 16 Career Clusters.

The Career Fair is sponsored by the RRISD Partners in Education Foundation and coordinated by the Career and Technology Education Department to encourage students to explore career opportunities aligned with the district’s career pathways and to consider a wider range of career possibilities.

Why is this event important to business partners?

Round Rock ISD recognizes the need to support education and training to address the diverse labor and workforce needs of the Central Texas Area. This event is a great opportunity for local businesses and post-secondary schools to connect with future students and employees to share workforce expectations and expose them to the preparation and skills needed for success.

What is the goal of the fair?

The Career Fair is a wonderful opportunity for ninth grade students across the district to learn more about potential careers, RRISD Academies, and postsecondary educational options in the Central Texas Area. This annual event features a college and career readiness program that offers students the opportunity to hear about the importance of education directly from the district superintendent, attend interest-specific career exploration sessions, and visit with area businesses that align to all 16 career clusters.

How does the career fair support RRISD academies?

RRISD academies are designed to teach core academics in the context of careers in various industries. Currently we have six different academy options: Business Finance Marketing, Fine Arts, Health Sciences, Human Services, Law Safety and Security (beginning 2010-2011), and Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics). Our goal is to provide smaller learning communities through the academy model that promote relationships, rigorous academics, and relevant instruction that motivates students to stay in school and pursue post-secondary education and careers in high-wage, high demand careers.

Business and industry partnerships are a key component to the success of our academies. The instructional and enrichment opportunities that businesses offer within the school day and on-site business and industry tours/events help students make the connections between academics and the real world.

The Career Fair is an excellent opportunity to highlight the outstanding educational opportunities that RRISD academies have to offer and provide students exposure to all of the post-secondary education and business opportunities right in their own backyard.
