Teachers receive Foundation grants to fund programs

2009 Excellence in Education Grant winnerRound Rock ISD teachers at 20 campuses were surprised with checks and the news that they were winners of Excellence in Education Grants. The Round Rock ISD Partners in Education Foundation sponsors the grant program to provide funding for resources and tools that can significantly and positively impact student achievement and learning.

The Foundation is proud to invite the community to participate in the funding of these grants. Please review these grants and consider making a safe online donation. Your support will extend the funding the Foundation was able to provide to 15 grants that scored among the highest.

Grants were available to groups of Round Rock ISD educators and/or administrators for projects that support best instructional practices benefiting students in a grade level, school, group of schools, or district-wide.The Foundation awarded more than $31,000 to teachers across the district for educational programs.

Schools winning the 2009 grants are:

  • Anderson Mill Elementary School, $1,100 — Best Practice through Biographies (Keri Yamnik, Gina Shen, Angela Stillman and Tammi Carter)
  • Bluebonnet Elementary School, $2,095.30 — SMART Students: Math & Technology Integrations with Art and Music Instruction (Barbara Berry, Darlene Henson and Derrick Wilson)
  • Brushy Creek Elementary School, $2,997.75 — Bringing the Curriculum Alive with Visual Technology (wendy Greinke, Jenny Estes, Anna Hudson, Liz Janish and Katie Maybaum)
  • Cactus Ranch Elementary School, $2,530 — Poor, Poor Pluto – A Planet No More (Lindsay Jones, Krista Peake, Amanda Carson and Robert Heard)
  • Canyon Creek Elementary School, $1,200 — Building Blocks for Math Success (Marcia Bates, Shannon Benoit, Lisa Clarke, Cindy Huttenhower and Katrine Kohls)
  • Deep Wood Elementary School, $871.92 — Handwriting Without Tears (Therese Wafford, Annette Freres, Alice Kilgora and Paula Powell)
  • Fern Bluff Elementary School, $1,130 — Flipping Out Over History! (Deidra Floyd and Mark Kanis)
  • Forest North Elementary School, $1,665 — LEGO Mindstorms Robotics Project (Prairie James, Kathy Potral and Julie Haney)
  • Great Oaks Elementary School, $2,591.89 — SMART Students: Integrating Music and Art Instruction with Math, Science, Language Arts and Technology (Alisha Gabriel, Mike Stout, Angela Padilla and Suzanne West)
  • Live Oak Elementary School, $1,200 — Language, Interests, New Experiences through Growing Opportunities (LINGO) (Mary Morris, Johanna Friedel and Jeanne Balkman)
  • Purple Sage Elementary School, $1,200 — A Glass Act: Science and Art (Emily Thurman, Negina Kolesar, Nydia Cantu and Erinn Henrichs)
  • Sommer Elementary School, $1,200 — Teaching 4th Grade Science and Math through LEGO Robotics (Revathi Balakrishnan, Amy Stearns and Kelly Coggin)
  • Union Hill Elementary School, $2,200 — Developing and Improving Reading Fluency for Below Grade Level Readers, Utilizing iPods and Recording Technology in the Reading Laboratory or Classroom (Donna Wise, Chris Garza, Elizabeth Hodges, Kay Lynne Diamond and Odalid Guerra)
  • Wells Branch Elementary School, $556 — Improving Achievement One Step at a Time (Amanda Gallagher, Judy Williams, Laurie Teinert, Lauren Derrington, Susanne Johnston, Jill Keler and Jen McDonald)
  • C.D. Fulkes Middle School, $1,550 — Opera: The Marriage of Choir and Theatre Arts II (Heather Rosen and Tara Bonds)
  • Deerpark Middle School, $2,280 — Science Experience Remediation for At-Risk Students (Sher Stultz and Bernadette De La Garza)
  • Grisham Middle School, $1,055 — Seeing is Knowing (Jennie Tidwell, Julie Gobert, Rosalyn Mack, Wendy Levine and Gayle Gulyasar)
  • Round Rock High School, $1,000 — The Self Sustaining Research Garden (Joan Gambrell, Leslie Lopez, Trey Nobles, John Hallmark and Danielle White)
  • Round Rock Opportunity Center, $823.28 — Powered by the Sun (Brian LeBansky, Dominic Perez, Kenneth Carson, Lisa Blair and Ellen Blumberg)
  • Stony Point 9th Grade Center/Stony Point High School, $1,650 — SMARTening Up Your Classroom (David McCarroll, Renee Keough, Darlene Austin, Joy Windell, Denise Blomquist and Heath Walz)

The funded projects will impact an estimated 6,859 students directly, and many others will benefit from the materials and programs in coming years.

Individual Foundation Board Members and a representative from administration traveled to the schools to present checks to the grant recipients and announce the achievement via pep rally, morning announcements or staff meetings.
