STARS Mentor program

f6f1ac8aCity proclaims National Mentoring Month

The Round Rock City Council designated January 2010 as National Mentoring Month during its January council meeting.

The proclamation acknowledged the importance of mentoring as a youth development strategy and offers support and encouragement to help young people become responsible productive adults. Mentoring programs have been shown to help students stay in school and improve academically, boost self-esteem and communication skills, and improve the changes of going on to higher education.

The Round Rock ISD STARS Mentoring Program brings together caring adults and students who need positive role models. Mayor Alan McGraw encouraged Round Rock citizens to consider making a difference themselves by signing up to mentor a student.

About the Mentor Program

Round Rock ISD’s STARS (Supporting, Teaching and Reaching Students) Mentor Program is a school-based, motivational program encompassing grades K-12. Mentors are matched with a student in a one-on-one relationship and meet regularly on the school campus for 30 minutes to an hour one time per week. The meetings can often be fit into a lunch hour. As an added measure to improve student safety, Round Rock Independent School District requires any person wishing to volunteer agree to a Name Based Criminal History Check each school year. This is in addition to the Raptor System, which compares all visitor names against sexual offender databases and is currently implemented at all RRISD campuses.
